EVIDENCE FOR EFFICACY (HUMAN DATA)

Clinical Trials
Yohimbine has been evaluated in the management of erectile disorder by means of placebo-controlled but often poorly designed trials. It does appear to have a modest therapeutic benefit over placebo, particularly in essentially psychogenic erectile disorder. Riley 1994

SAFETY DATA

Adverse Effects & Toxicity
A severe case of intractable priapism associated with the ingestion of yohimbe extract has been reported; management required insertion of a proximal cavernosal spongiosum shunt (Quackles shunt) in the operating room. Myers 2009
[Risky pills: supplements to avoid] No authors 2008
A study of the effect of Corynanthe yohimbe on germ cells in Swiss albino mice applying reproductive, cytological and biochemical parameters showed decrease in male fertility, abnormalities and chromosomal aberrations of spermatozoa and changes in biochemical parameters. Al-Majed 2006
Clinical evidence on adverse events of herbal food supplements for body weight reduction, including Pausinystalia yohimbe, for which effectiveness data from rigorous clinical trials exist were assessed. Pittler 2005
[Dangerous supplements: still at large.] No authors 2004
Interactions
A review on herb-drug interactions revealed plausible cases including increased risk of hypertension when tricyclic antidepressants are combined with yohimbine (Pausinystalia yohimbe). Fugh-Berman 2000
Contraindications

EVIDENCE OF ACTIVITY

Animal Studies
By mapping the distribution volume of [(11)C]mirtazapine (a ligand for PET studies of antidepressant binding) in porcine living brain, study showed that alpha(2)-adrenoceptor blockers yohimbine and RX 821002 caused a decrease in [(11)C]mirtazapine pB throughout the forebrain. Smith 2006
A study on aqueous extract of Pausinystalia yohimbe (CCD-X) on vascular and renal regional hemodynamics in Sprague Dawley rats revealed that CCD-X possesses endothelin-like actions and affects nitric oxide production in renal circulation. Ajayi 2003

Analytical Chemistry
Qualitative and quantitative analysis of Pausinystalia yohimbe-type alkaloids in the barks of Rubiaceae species was done using analytical approaches like GC-MS & non-aqueous CE (NACE) with diode array detection. The recovery of yohimbine was 91.2-94.0% with RSD 1.4-4.3%. Chen 2008
Fourier transform infrared rays and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis revealed that both sorbents from grape stalks and yohimbe bark wastes were able to reduce Cr(VI) to its trivalent form from aqueous solutions. Fiol 2008
A rapid qualitative and quantitative method based on an HPLC-UV-MS technique with atmospheric pressure chemical ionization and electrospray ionization for the analysis of yohimbine in authentic yohimbe bark in a number of commercial aphrodisiac products is reported. Zanolari 2003
A method for extraction and capillary gas chromatographic separation of the alkaloids of P. yohimbe was developed and used to analyze a number of commercial yohimbe products. Betz 1995
A study of the alkaloid content of trunk-barks of Pausinystalia macroceras resulted in isolation of six alkaloids, five of which are indole alkaloids that belong to the yohimbane and heteroyohimbane groups; yohimbine was found in large amount. Leb?uf 1981
